Herbivore - Bakuchiol Retinol Alternative Smoothing Serum *FIRST IMPRESSIONS* REVIEW

A skincare sybarite such as myself is always on the hunt for the next best anti-aging skincare. So when the Midori Chrome extension recommended the Herbivore Bakuchiol Retinol Alternative Smoothing Serum, I must admit I was intrigued. But before we delve in, we must take a quick trip down memory lane.

Our journey starts nearly seven years ago when I was a mere 22 year old. My eldest sister (who is a doctor) was raving about this revolutionary anti-aging cream called retinoid cream, and as any good sister would do, wrote a prescription for Retin-A. For those that have been living under a rock, retinoids are a synthetic derivative of vitamin A that helps eliminate and reduce signs of aging, improve appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin texture. Not all retinoids require prescription; their over-the-counter counterpart is called retinol.

At the time, there were not many retinol creams available on the market and so this was the easiest way to retinoids.

After just one day of use my skin exhibited signs of irritation such as flakiness and peeling. While the reaction was not painful, it was very noticeable and so after about three days of use, I decided to stop using the cream. I was despondent that my sensitive skin had an unpleasant reaction to the cream. Months later I learned that these side effects were common and should subdue within 2 to 6 weeks. But even had I known at the time, I don’t know that I would have continued to use it. Six weeks is a long time to go out in public looking like “sir-peels-a-lot!

”Fast forward to seven years later - suddenly retinoids are available all over Sephora but in the form of retinol creams! Because of my sensitive skin I hadn’t put a second thought to trying the safer over the counter versions that were all the rage. However, when I was recommended the Herbivore Bakuchiol serum, I decided it might be worth a shot.

But first: what exactly is Bakuchiol?
Well, it’s a gentle vegan formula derived from plant extract that offers the same skin benefits of retinoids but without the side effects. Therefore perfect for those with sensitive skin! Needless to say, I was excited to try the product and purchased it on the spot!

Now to the important part! Thanks to the VIB Rouge perk, I received the package within two days and have been using the Herbivore Bakuchiol Serum religiously for a week! Here is my first impression:

Design/Packaging: Absolutely obsessed. I love the minimalist design and the pastel coloring of the box.

Texture: The serum feels very watery with a slight stickiness to it. Once applied, it absorbs well and does not have that tackiness sensation that some other serums contain.

Scent: The product does not have any scent and therefore is great for those that are sensitive to fragrances.

Application: I love a good dropper applicator (makes me feel like a knock off chemist) - all you need is about two drops. A little goes a long way with this product.

Short Term Results: As it’s only been a week it’s hard to draw conclusions on the efficacy of the product. However, I have not had any negative reaction to the product and overall my skin feels great. Sometimes with serums there’s an uncomfortable stickiness that lingers on your face, but this product absorbs well and sits comfortably on the skin. My skin feels great and I definitely feel that my complexion looks smooth. Some may call it the placebo effect, but we will be back here in a few weeks to give you our final conclusion! Stay tuned!
